Definitions

Hiking

Walking outdoors. Equipment may include a backpack with water, food, clothing, and first aid kit, or trekking poles.

Scrambling

In-between hiking and rock climbing, where hands are used for balance and a rope might be carried and used.

Bouldering

Climbing on boulders or shorter cliff walls without a rope. Foam pads are used for protection from falls.

Rock climbing

Rock climbing involves the use of a rope, belaying, and protection (natural or artificial) to protect the leader from a long fall.

Rappelling

Descending on a rope. Both mechanical and non-mechanical methods exist for rappelling.

Mountaineering

The climbing of mountains, especially using special equipment and techniques on rock, ice, or snow.

Ski mountaineering

Climbing mountains either on skis or carrying them and then descending on skis.

Skiing outside of a ski resort in unmarked or unpatrolled areas (also called off-piste).
